The city was once called Herculaneum, went down in history not only for its architecture, but for the tragic fate, that in 79 AD along with Pompeii was buried by lava and ash of the eruption of Vesuvius. After almost 2000 years thanks to the archaeological excavations it was established that, many artifacts from the Roman period have been preserved beautifully. Currently the site is visited with or without a tour guide.
